Reducing Bullying in our Schools

Two-thirds of teens are teased and one-third of teens are bullied at
least once per month. According to a publication of the Journal of
the American Medical Association, victims of bullying are at greater
risk for common colds, coughs, sore throats, poor appetite, and
night walking. Additionally, it is unrealistic to expect our students to
focus on the school curriculum when they fear for their safety in
school.
Bullying is unprovoked, often repeated, and aggressive. It can be
physical, verbal, or psychological. Bullying occurs through physical
aggression, verbal or written attacks, and exclusion. Additionally,
bullying can transpire electronically through email, chat rooms, and
text messaging.
The United States Supreme Court has ruled that schools may be
held financially responsible for demonstrating "deliberate
indifference" for student-to-student sexual harassment, and courts
have interpreted this to also hold schools liable for bullying. In
some cases, administrators and teachers find they are personally
sued. Unfortunately, educators are too often receiving little
systematic training regarding these legal issues.
While educators have a legal responsibility to act, we also know
that much bullying and harassment occurs out of the sight of
adults. Every day 60 percent of American teens witness bullying at
least once per day. Some intervene, many do not. Part of creating
safe spaces is in helping children develop the skills and
confidence to stand-up for each other.

grouping on children. - Examine ways to create less bullies.
- Create a safer space in their school community.
- Summarize the various reasons for which students are
bullied. - Create lesson plans that integrate bullying across the
curriculum. - Help students intervene over incidents of bullying.
