Religious Pluralism in Our Schools
Contact us for training on this topic.

America is the most religiously diverse society in the world.
However, our religious pluralism sometimes results in hostility
rather than a celebration of our diversity. Public schools must
model the type of discourse that we want to see in our larger
society, a space in which the wide diversity of religious convictions
are treated with fairness and respect. Whether one belongs to an
ideology of the religious right, the secular left, or somewhere in
between, there is a great deal of common ground on this issue.
Some of this common ground is required by law due to Supreme
Court decisions. In other cases it is an obligation of educators to
create a safe and equitable space for their students.

The First Amendment Center, a non-partisan organization
dedicated to promoting understanding and civil discourse about
the First Amendment, calls for the following basic principles for
managing the topic of religion and public schools. Our trainings will
include each of these principles integrated with the legal rights and
responsibilities of schools and students:
  1. Religious Liberty for All
  2. The Meaning of Citizenship
  3. Public Schools Belong to All Citizens
  4. Religious Liberty and Public Schools
  5. The Relationship between Parents and Schools
  6. Conduct of Public Disputes

These principles are endorsed by organizations spanning the
political and professional spectrum: American Association of
School Administrators, National School Boards Association,
National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers,
American Center for Law and Justice, Christian Coalition, the Anti-
Defamation League, People for the American Way, and many other
organizations.
